DID YOU KNOW?

More than 2.47 million people in the United States work in the music industry. These professionals—from musicians to venue staff to sound engineers and more—depend on good hearing to practice their craft. Yet by its very nature, the music industry puts people at exponentially higher risk of developing noise-induced hearing loss compared to people in the general population.

According to a report by U.S. based organization the Hearing Health Foundation, musicians are four times more likely to develop noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) as the general public.

Musicians are 57% more likely to develop tinnitus.

In 2015, the World Health Organization identified entertainment venues as a future cause of noise-induced hearing loss, and research found that ‘more than 40 million adult Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 are affected by non-occupational NIHL.

Repeated exposure to sound 85 dB or louder (the sound of a window AC unit) for 8 hours or more a day can cause premature and permanent hearing loss (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 2019).

There are 5 hearing disorders caused by music-induced hearing loss: 1) hearing loss 2) distortion of sound 3) tinnitus 4) hyperacusis 5) diplacusis
