WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR HEARING TEST

When was the last time you looked forward to a health care appointment? The friendly, professional staff members at Johnson Audiology are determined to make your experience on your path to healthy hearing so pleasant that you can’t wait to visit. If you have never had a hearing test, perhaps you are wondering what to expect. Read on to learn more.

STEP 1

FRIENDLY, PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND A CLEAN, COMFORTABLE OFFICE

A warm smile by our patient care coordinators will greet you when you walk in the door. Come a bit early to get checked in. We send your new patient paperwork by mail or email in advance of your appointment so have that filled out before you arrive and bring your driver’s license and insurance card. Sit back and relax with a warm cup of coffee or a cold beverage and a sweet or salty snack in our clean, comfortable front lobby until your appointment time.

STEP 2

A SPACIOUS AUDIOMETRIC BOOTH FOR TESTING

Your audiologist calls you back to a spacious audiometric testing booth and begins by checking your ears for issues like wax and fluid. Next, you put on earphones or headphones. You have visual and auditory contact with your audiologist the entire time you are in the booth. You listen for sounds, including beeps at various frequencies. You are also presented recorded words. As you respond by depressing a handheld button when you hear beeps or by repeating back understood words, your hearing thresholds are plotted. A hearing threshold is the softest sound you can detect about 50% of the time. If you have ringing in your ears, called tinnitus, your audiologists does some additional testing.

STEP 3

A LOOK AT YOUR AUDIOGRAM

Your hearing diagnostic results from the sound-treated booth are plotted on a graph called an audiogram. Your audiologist reviews and explains your audiogram as the last step of your first appointment and answers any questions you may have. Your audiologist, who is university-trained in understanding hearing loss and styles and brands of hearing aids, makes recommendations for hearing technology based on the results of your audiogram. When you made your appointment, our staff gathered your insurance information so that your audiologist is also able to cover any insurance benefits you may have for hearing health care and hearing aids. All this information allows you to make an informed choice for your own hearing health care.
